Speed Uno
This is a series of questions about the human nervous system.?
Numero uno. Why are the cell bodies in the cerebral cortex unmyelinated? This hinders cranial processing speed by a factor of 100.
Numero dos. In the nervous system, synapses are either chemical or electrical. Why are synapses not just electrical? This would eliminate the lag period present in chemical connections.
Numero tres. Hormones play a critical role in the normal functioning of a human being. In theory, what effects would the absolute absence of hormones have in a mature man?
1) Unfortunately our muscles aren’t lightning quick so our brains can’t be either. It wouldn’t matter if our brains were lightning quick because our eyes and the little bones in our ears and the nerves in our skin would still move at molasses pace. Our brains just couldn’t handle being super fast in a super slow body.
2)Same here. Some chemicals are necessary in the brain, like serotonin. If receptors were all electrical, we wouldn’t have any emotions. We would be no different from computers.
3) Absolute absence of hormones would equal death. You’re forgetting about insulin, a very important hormone. Without insulin, the sugar in your blood cannot be digested and will turn to acid. It’s called ketoacidosis. My sister is a diabetic and she was hospitalized for three months from ketoacidosis.
